Super strong best drywall anchors keep your prized artworks or recently installed shelves securely mounted in your office or home. They are the ultimate wall fasteners. I talked about artworks and shelves, but in reality, they can mount any kind of item on walls or ceiling, especially when there is no convenient stud behind it for support. Besides, bare screws aren’t as stable. You cannot trust your prized possessions like a family photo, a fancy mirror, valuable artwork, a smoke alarm, a pot rack, or a bookshelf to an unstable screw.

Therefore, every DIY enthusiast or even a onetime charmer needs to have quality anchors in their toolbox.  In this article cum buyer’s guide, I will be reviewing ten best anchors for drywall. These products are chosen based on their strength and ease of use. I didn’t include any molly bolts because they require extra work for little value. If you don’t want to read through the entire article, take a look at my best recommendations below.

  • Holds weight: 10. 20 and 40 lbs

  • No tools needed

  • Make a very minuscule hole, so repairs are easy
  • Very sturdy and hold decorations well

  • Expensive
  • Can’t secure shelves

Do you want an innovative product for hanging decoratives that is fun to use too? Who wouldn’t! Try monkey hook. This hook is more convenient to install than a regular nail and is more secure as well. Once installed, its tiny head is hardly visible. It also makes a very nominal hole, so repairs are even more convenient.

To install, simply push the sharp end through the wall almost a quarter-inch above where you want it. Twist it back and forth. Once the shaft is through the wall, push it slightly to activate the self-locking mechanism. And, that’s it – no need to use any tool. Its self-boring tip penetrates the walls on the slightest of pressure. Even though made of steel, the monkey hook is reasonably lightweight.

Now the price may seem a bit much when compared with other fasteners, but there’s a catch. In addition to Monkey hooks, this package includes more durable Gorilla hooks along with 10 flush mount hooks that sit much closer to the wall for trickier hanging items. Therefore, it’s an excellent value for the money.

  • Dimensions: 4.8 x 4.3 x 3.3 inches
  • Weight: 1.4 lbs
  • Material: Steel
  • Size: multiple

  • Steel construction is high quality, and very secure
  • They are large and heavy due to which they hold very firm
  • Spring wings distribute the weight evenly over a large area
  • Best for permanent hanging

  • Pre-drilled hole is necessary for proper installation
  • Leave large holes in the wall

The Hillman Group’s Toggle Bolts allow anchoring large size décor and home improvement objects on hollow walls. The package contains 50 bolts – robust, durable and firm. These ‘suckers’ will keep your items mounted on walls forever.

The slotted round heads can be easily fixed with a Philips head screwdriver. Its specially designed spring-action wings spread apart behind the base after installation providing a very firm hold. Due to which, it disperses the weight evenly over a significant area. Hence increasing the overall weight, it can withstand. This is the reason I recommend using Toggle bolts for hanging heavier items instead of monkey hooks.

Even though these toggle bolts are rather large, heavy and work best on hollow walls, they hold very firmly. You can hang a picture or install heavier shelves. These are your permanent hanging solutions.

TheseWingIt will hold firm unless you pull your wall apart. Ideal for window dressing brackets and most bathroom accessories, this master anchor is a good fit for hundreds of other installation.

They can hold weight up to 300lbs in half inches drywall. To achieve this feat, it utilizes a set of three plastic legs to distribute the weight evenly. As the legs are quite flexible, they can absorb more shock. The only downsides I see are that they require a three quarter-inch hole in the wall, and they leave a full one-inch flange on the outside. Secondly, reaming out a big ¾ inches hole is a chore.

In my experience, these anchors work best in brand new drywall. Because of plastic legs, their firmness deteriorates on potentially damaged and old parts of drywall in the house.

The Arrow 160455 is an all in one kit that can take care of just about any light to medium duty DIY projects for you. They hold well up to 20 lbs capacity. So you can mount small decor items, paintings, or even small shelves by selecting the blue and white drywall anchors. Simply drill a hole, insert the plastic anchor and screw in the screw. And you are done in a minute.

The kit contains 36 6-8 x 3/4 inches and 36 8-10 x 7/8 inches anchors to suit multiple projects. What I like most about this kit is that you don’t have to worry about the screw head in order to drive the anchors. It is already included in the package. Additionally, it comes with 18 6 X 1-inches, 16 10 X 1 ½ inch, 18 8 X 1 ¼ inches screws, 18 4 X 1-inches, and two drill bits to ease your job.

With this kit, you can keep everything secure, organized, and readily accessible.

A self-drilling anchor simplifies your life. They eliminate the need for pre-drill holes. For example, you can hang floating shelves very conveniently. Simply use a manual Philips screwdriver to insert these nails and anchors in the wall. No pesky white dust to ruin your floor. Unscrewing them is as convenient. You can screw them right back out of the walls. There is no need to pry out with needle-nose pliers.

This kit includes 20 Plastic Anchors, 20 8 x 1-1/4” Phillips Screws, along with a Plastic Case. You can screw them by hand. But I wouldn’t recommend it because most projects require very measured spots for holes. And drilling by hand is usually not very precise, especially in this case. As these drywall anchors can create a significant hole in the wall, you wouldn’t like re-screwing. Learn from my experience!

Overall, they sit very flush with the surface. With a load capacity of 50 lbs, these durable plastic anchors are a long term solution to any medium-duty DIY project.

  • Dimensions: 1.4 x 5.1 x 7.4 inches

No backing? Don’t worry! “The beast” will hold your wall. Though the beast was initially developed for the Wingits grab bars, I tried it with leading grab bar brands like Kohler, Glacier Bay, and Moen without any difficulty. So it is rightly called the beast for versatility.

Initially, they are a little hard to align, but once you get the hang of it, very sturdy and easy to install. You can install these within 10 minutes – no exaggeration. Capable of handling up to 20 lbs, they hold up very well. Bear in mind, however, that if you are installing wingIts in tougher materials, they may not hold as much weight. Additionally, the self-waterproofing and heavy-duty stainless steel construction is built to last the tests of time.

At the moment, it is extensively used in government, hospitality, and healthcare industries. The steep price maybe its only limitation. But overall, they are one of the best anchors for drywall.

  • Dimensions: 7 x 3.5 x 1.5 inches
  • Weight: 13.6 ounces
  • Material: Zinc-coated metal
  • Size: multiple
  • Holds weight: Upto50/40lbs

  • Made of Zinc coated metal which is stronger than plastic
  • Can hold higher weights

  • Includes screws
  • Works well with various drywall sizes

  • Tip of the metal piece can break off easily, therefore use with caution

By expanding on the standard plastic design, the Screw-Itself drilling drywall anchors give you a more durable and reliable choice for top quality connections.

They work on panels between 3/8 inches and 5/8 inches thick. For this purpose, they offer two solutions: Large and small anchors. Large anchors can hold up to 50 lbs weight while the mini ones hold well up to 40 lbs. Thus giving you two different ways to secure objects together. This kit also comes with 50 screws that fit both size options. In addition, they are easy to install, easy to remove, and once installed, not easy to spot. The only downside I see is that the tip is somewhat brittle.

All in all, as these anchors use zinc coated metal instead of a plastic construction, which is more durable and rust-resistant. Thus they are the best drywall anchors for heavy items.

  • Package dimensions: 5.1 x 4.3 x 1.1 inches
  • Weight: 7.2 ounces
  • Material: metal
  • Size: multiple

  • Many different wall anchors for different uses
  • Sturdy and fairly easy to install
  • Does not require any pre-drill holes
  • Screws come included in the kit

  • The kit includes more smaller pieces than medium ones
  • Hard to get out if a piece gets stuck in the wall

As the name suggests, this is an anchor assortment kit. It comes with screws, anchors, wall anchor hooks, and hollow door hooks. In total, 112 pieces to keep your DIY activity going. For a complete list, check out the Amazon page.

Relatively easy to install, the anchors are some of the best for drywall. Each plastic anchor has ribs that prevent it from turning in during the installation phase. The hollow door hook provides a firm hold from within the thin panels. The anchors go into the drywall very smoothly and hold well. However, the ones that break during the installation phase are very hard to pull back. That’s the only downside I see to this product.

In general, I will recommend this assortment kit for small to medium-duty work, like picture framing or nail art.

  • Dimensions: 2 x 4 x 10 inches
  • Weight: 11.2 ounces
  • Material: Zinc plated steel
  • Thread Size: 1/4″-20 Holds

  • They require only half inches hole which is small comparatively
  • Plastic straps of toggle position the support perfectly
  • Easy to use

  • Need pre-drilled holes
  • The installation process is a bit tricky

In case you want the strength but are annoyed by the one-inch flang on the WingIts and want something smaller, Toggler Snaptoggle BB Toggle Anchor may just be for you. This made in the USA super handy toggle anchor provides a firm hold for materials with 3/8″ to 3-5/8 inches thickness. You can fix it on gypsum board, concrete block, and of course, drywall.

Whether you are installing by bare hands or using a tool, the anchor channel stays firm and fixed and will not rotate. It stays in place to facilitate any screw changes if the bolt is removed. Besides, the anchor channel is made of zinc-coated steel, which is rust-resistant and quite durable. After inserting the toggle through one inch pre-drilled hole, zip the small plastic flang into its proper place. You can snap off any extra length of the straps. Then insert the included screw, which will tighten the toggle as you mount your tv.

  • Dimensions: 3.3 x 3.5 x 2.2 inches
  • Weight: 6.4 ounces
  • Hold weight: 50lbs
  • Size: 7/16 inches

  • Very lightweight yet sturdy and durable
  • Affordable price for people on a budget
  • Zinc coated steel construction

  • Require a pre-drilled hole
  • The smaller diameter bolt head limits their use without a washer

Your wall will give out before them. These durable little toggle bolts are incredible for holding and hanging objects on hollow, drywall, tiles, or plaster. They are very lightweight yet sturdy enough to hold an earthquake. Thanks to zinc-coated steel construction.

The spring action wings provide anchorage while the slotted round head screw is convenient to install. Upon installation, the wings spread apart for a firm hold. Thus dispersing the weight of hanging objects evenly over a large area. That is why they can hold up to 50 lbs in weight and are one of the best drywall anchors for heavy items.

That said, I love the small head and size of these toggles. But not all users may find these useful. Especially since sometimes you have to depress the wings. So keep these limitations in mind before making a purchase.

Factors to Consider

Let’s take a look at some factors you should be taking into account if you are considering shopping for the best drywall anchors

There are three main types of drywall anchors

Highly versatile and light-duty, the expansion drywall anchors can also be used with concrete, sheet metal, mortar, or bricks. As the name suggests, they expand against the material to create a firm hold. Made of plastic, zinc-metal, or nylon, they are an excellent choice for mounting projects up to 30 lbs.

Toggle Bolt

A hollow wall anchor, “Molly Bolt,” or a Toggle Bolt is essentially the same thing. They are used when you require some serious holding capacity. During insertion, they fold flat against the bolt but flare outwards against the back of drywall afterward. Unique design allows them to create a perpendicular brace along with the drywall for a secure mount. Depending on the design, they can hold up to 300 lbs.

Self-drilling or threaded anchors are recommended for medium-duty applications up to 75 lbs. They are fairly lightweight and straightforward to install as they don’t need any pre-drilled holes. They have a sharp pointy flank that can be screwed in the wall. Like the expansion anchors, these can be made of nylon, plastic, or zine-coated metal.

Type of support

The biggest aspect that determines an Anchor’s strength level is how well it can spread the tensile load across a wide area.  While pop open anchors are comparatively easy to install, you should be considering anchors that spread weight more evenly if you are to hold a heavier item. In this scenario, you should look for a two-piece design. Such anchors have a brace inside the wall that clamps down once you tighten the screw.

Type of Installation

If you are handy with screwdrivers and own one of the best screwdrivers in the market, you wouldn’t blink at pre-drilling holes, but self-drilling anchors can save you precious time. Hammer-in anchors are another option, though pushing it through drywall can tear it and make a dent. No drill? Then you can use a drywall saw, as long as you can keep the hole centrally aligned.

Does your anchor has a reusable design? While not necessary, reusable anchors are more handy, obviously. Now, some anchors pop out even with bare hands, while others may require poking around inside the screw hole because you cannot straighten the flip-out anchor otherwise. Some anchors have a permanent design that needs larger holes for removal.

Screw Size

In case you need to bolt a bracket to a wall, notice the size of the hole, and compare your options. Some best drywall anchors leave a very unnoticeable hole. Remember that a small high strength machine screw can work really well with a large bracket hole if you add in a fender washer. However, an oversized screw won’t go through a smaller aperture – no matter how hard you try – unless you get that drill out.

Flange and Hole size

Some holes may require holes as big as ¾ inches. Usually, the strongest anchors require the biggest holes. At times, that is fine. But if my strongest anchor leaves a hideous plastic flange past the edge of my bookshelf, I’ll never buy that again. Simple as that!

Best Drywall Anchors – Final Thoughts

All things considered, the best anchors for drywall keep your precious items – like your grandma’s antique mirror – secure. Or if you don’t have grandma, then you can still use them for fitting shelves, securing the TV, hanging decorations on drywall and ceilings, etc. It is essential to know your needs, like how much load you need to carry, the wall material, and what type of anchor will be most suitable. I hope after reading through this article, you have got enough information to make an educated purchase. Good luck!
